In the SVS Book Club, book lovers can join together to appreciate and celebrate the diverse ways in which authors have adopted works by Shakespeare and other classic authors over the centuries.

This year, we’ll explore retellings of classic folktales from Mexico, India, and Cuba, with one middle-grade fantasy adventure novel and two picture books for kids and adults.

Joining is simple! Just read the book, then log in for the live Zoom meeting on the day of discussion. You can also join our Facebook group in advance to share your thoughts, dig deeper, and get the conversation started.

And if you purchase your books from Hicklebee’s Bookstore in San José, you’ll receive 20% off while supporting a well-loved local small business! Details below.

Fall schedule

Saturday, October 9 at 1pm PT: Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Mejia

Join us for a discussion of this middle-grade fantasy adventure based on the Mexican legend of La Llarona (The Crying Woman). This thrilling, fantastical tale is part of the Rick Riordan Presents series, which publishes books that use the mythology of diverse cultures and countries, similarly to Riordan’s award-winning Percy Jackson book series.
