Team SVShakes is excited for our 2020 Season, “Make Your Choice” – the choice to succumb or the choice to fight, the choice to love or the choice to hide, the choice to defy the status quo. Which choices will you make? Find out with our upcoming season:
48-Hour Play Festival: SuperShakes
Romeo and Juliet
Measure for Measure
Sense and Sensibility
Based on the novel by Jane Austen
Directed by Jonathan Williams
SuperShakes – It’s a bird… it’s a plane… it’s SUPERSHAKES! Romeo is faster than a speeding bullet? Macbeth can teleport? Beatrice can read minds? Anything can happen at Silicon Valley Shakespeare’s sixth annual 48-hour festival, co-produced with the Foothill College Theatre Arts Department, where our writers will explore what happens when epic superheroes get thrown into a Shakespeare classic!
Ms. Cast –“A woman could never play that role!” Me thinks the gentlemen protest too much. The ladies of SVS prove the cynics wrong and celebrate the year of the woman as they take the stage as some of Shakespeare’s most iconic male roles proving that they are NOT miscast.
Romeo and Juliet – A romance for the ages ignites when the passionate Romeo and Juliet meet. But with hatred and disapproval dividing their families, can their love find its way? Shakespeare holds the mirror up to life as we see the tragic consequences of choices fueled by hate. SVS presents this iconic tragedy for a new age showing the tragedy of these star-crossed lovers still rings true today and that #loveislove.
Measure for Measure – Trapped in a world where authority goes unchecked and power is abused, Isabella is given a nefarious proposition by the powerful Angelo- her brother’s life for her virginity. Left with nothing but her courage and cunning, Isabella faces a choice: succumb to Angelo or fight against the corruption she faces. Our beloved Bard deftly balances this compelling tragicomedy with the absurdly humorous and the tragically serious, as SVS shows how this tale is more relevant than ever in an age where many can sadly say, #Metoo.
Sense and Sensibility – A playful new adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel follows the fortunes (and misfortunes) of the Dashwood sisters—sensible Elinor and hypersensitive Marianne—after their father’s sudden death leaves them financially destitute and socially vulnerable. Set in gossipy late 18th-century England, with a fresh female voice, the play is full of humor, emotional depth, and bold theatricality. Sense and Sensibility examines our reactions, both reasonable and ridiculous, to societal pressures. When reputation is everything, do you make the choice to follow your heart?
