For 2021, we have a very exciting lineup of new and recent works which build on Shakespeare and other classic stories from around the world! All our productions will be performed
live online for you to enjoy.
While the world around us is making progress to move past its pandemic pause, we’re exercising exceptional caution for the absolute safety of you, our patrons, as well as our artists. We’re continuing online this summer and already planning our triumphant return, in person with you, in 2022! If you like, you can read more about
our decision process.
Our other free offerings such as ShakesPod interviews, Bard Talks, and our Book Club, will also continue throughout the year.
The “Dear Will” Letters
April 23-25, 2021
Written by SVS resident Dramaturg Doll Piccotto and William Shakespeare himself, this production will feature real-life couples performing Shakespeare’s most iconic lovelorn personalities.
Performed live online, it will also feature scenes filmed from our summer stage at Sanborn Park!
June 4-20, 2021
a co-production with our fellow San José artists at The Tabard Theatre Company, a Jewish actor playing Shakespeare’s notorious money-lender as a villain attracts unwelcome protests and controversy at a Shakespeare festival. The actor’s contentious production of
The Merchant of Venice
has just been shut down, and Shylock presents the actor holding a talkback session to defend his work.
Performed live online from Tabard’s stage, using a multi-camera stream!
Much Improv About Nothing
July 9 & 16, 2021
SVS is thrilled to bring back one of 2020’s most popular online events! Much Improv About Nothing,
a co-production with
ComedySportz San José, went so nice we’re doing it twice. Improvised Shakespeare? Yes, please!
This hilariously unscripted performance featuring top ComedySportz performers is sure to be the funniest comedy that Shakespeare never wrote. Watch both shows… it’ll be totally new each time!
Folktales From Around the World
August 13-29, 2021
Do you miss travel? Join SVS for a trip around the world with classic folktales reimagined from Latin America, East Asia, Africa, the Middle East, the Polynesian Islands, and more!
Adventure and heartwarming lessons come to life as local writers and visual artists bring the magic of tales passed through the centuries from the page to the screen.
New episodes all summer!
SVS continues its podcast series with new episodes of ShakesPod
– a podcast that explores the weird and wonderful world of William Shakespeare.
In addition to the usual interviews and insights, this summer ShakesPod will bring you audio performances of THREE Shakespeare classics:
Titus Andronicus, The Comedy of Errors,
and Richard III.
