We are excited to announce that Silicon Valley Shakespeare will be part of a terrific new arts center in the heart of San José.
No, our performances aren’t moving. We’ll still perform at Sanborn Park and Willow Street Park, Shakespeare Camp is still at History Park, and our education programs will still be in schools near you.
SVS is one of eleven arts organizations that are initial anchor tenants for the new Creative Center for the Arts (CCA) managed by Silicon Valley Creates – a regional non-profit that has generously supported SVS for many years. On the heels of giving a special commendation to SVS last October, the San José City Council this week approved the CCA’s Ground Lease Agreement, so we’re finally announcing this imminent move, that’s been in the works for over a year.
Mayor Sam Liccardo said, “we see the Creative Center for the Arts as a new model for supporting the arts in the 21st century and a big win for San José.” SVS is one of many arts organizations – including San José Taiko, San José Jazz, Téatro Vision, CreaTV, New Ballet School, Empire 7 Gallery, and several others – who will have offices, rehearsal space, and various support services in this new, state-of-the-art building. Read all about it in the Mercury News!
The CCA will be in the heart of Japantown, featuring a four-story building and a large park in front. (Special outdoor event venue, anyone?) It will take a little while to build, of course, and we’ll update you along the way.
Until then, we’ll continue to enjoy our time at The Armory downtown. We anticipate being at the Armory at least into our 2019 summer season. We’re grateful for Fred Sharkey’s continual, longtime support of us in our years at The Armory, and we even just added scenic construction and storage to what we’re doing there. With all the development in the area, a move seemed likely one of these years, and the CCA was in the right place at the right time. We’re grateful to SVCreates, the City of San José, and the CCA’s various funders including the Packard Foundation, the Hewlett Foundation, and many more.
