ShakesSports: 48-Hour Play Festival
Let’s get ready to rumble!!!
The Macbeths playing hockey? Midsummer fairies having a hand in a tennis match? King Lear… playing Quidditch?!? Anything can happen at Silicon Valley Shakespeare’s fourth annual 48-hour festival, co-produced with the Foothill College Theatre Arts Department, where our writers will explore what happens when sports get thrown into a Shakespeare classic!
Dates: January 5-7, 2018
Location: Lohman Theatre, Foothill College
Theme: What happens to Shakespeare’s plays when a random sport is introduced to the story?
Friday, 6:30pm: Play Festival Kickoff – Teams are assigned and writers draw, at random, a Shakespeare play and a sport on which to base their script. All teams will be given a required line of dialogue, prop, and surprise requirement to incorporate into their pieces. Directors will sign up for rehearsal space slots and collect actor’s contact information for distributing scripts.
Saturday: Rehearsals are held starting at 12:30pm at The Armory in downtown San Jose. Scripts are due from writers at 12:00pm. Writers are required to email a copy to their director (who will send to the cast) and 48-hour festival staff. You will have all day to hunt for costumes and props and rehearse like a Shakespearean madman!
Sunday, Daytime: Rehearsals at Foothill College. In addition to your independent work, each team gets a 30-minute slot onstage between 11:00am-3:00pm to rehearse. A tech run-through of the entire festival will start on stage at 3:30pm.
Sunday, 6:30pm: SHOWTIME for ShakesSports ($12 admission)
Our audience will be given a ballot to determine which play is the Audience Favorite. Team members are not permitted to vote.
